Fancy dress costume party can be a whole lot of fun and the theme can be brought alive across all touch-points like music, party favors, food and the invite itself. There is no denying that costume parties are a lot of fun! It is that excitement of being someone else for that one night, the thrill of role-play, the delight in peeping into a whole new world for just an evening! Kids dressing up as superheroes or recreating a fairy tale, adults going ‘back to school’ or ‘into the future’, it’s that moment that allows you to be anything you want to be! How magical is that! This could be a favourite movie, TV show, cartoon, book, fairy tale, historic event or could be as simple as “dress as anything” party. While you may believe it’s less demanding to leave the costume idea ‘open’, having a particular theme helps to plan the entire party around it, from the invites and décor to the tableware and music! However, when selecting a theme, ensure 2 things: a) your guests should be familiar with the theme. b) there are enough characters to dress up as. Don’t make it too complicated as the guests will lose their enthusiasm. If you feel that your guest list includes people who will not go out of their way to dress up, then keep it simple like a colour theme. Costume party require minimum of one week or more notice than normal parties. It is unfair to spring a costume party on others by giving them too short a notice to create or buy a fancy dress costume. One of the thrills of a costume party is that of curating one’s costume! So give your guests enough time to put together something perfect, and then watch how everyone squeals in excitement at seeing everyone walk into the party in fancy costumes! Also make sure to send in themed invitations in style. For example, for a Disney theme party you might want to make invitations that open up to frame Micky Mouse ears. Food is an important element to be taken care of. Make sure the food you serve goes well with the theme. For example, if it’s a coloured theme, reflect it in your food, or for example, rum cakes would be apt for a pirate theme party. Music, too, is one of the important elements in a party so plan your playlist accordingly in advance.
